In this post I introduce and analyze some key findings from the GHH as well World Health Organization's (WHO) global action plan on mental health.
Background
The World Health Organization's (WHO) mental report GHH came out in June 2013. the first four reports that came out under GH President Margaret Chan's leadership, we have seen substantial advances in mental health, including a significant increase in people living mental health crisis. We have seen the number of suicides rise and the number of persons with mental illness living disability rise. These are important figures as they can serve barometer on the state of global mental health. The third and fourth reports we did from 1998-2008 are also very helpful in providing evidence on the situation today. At this year's World Mental Health Day (May 9th) I wrote a very extensive blog explaining the progress made during first decade of the report's publication. While this work is valuable, the GHH not about past, instead it is the future. Accordingly, GHH an annual benchmark report that is the primary tool for United Nations on the implementation of its human security agenda.
When the GHH was launched in 2002, it is no surprise that received a fair amount of criticism. During the first year after its launch, the WHO faced criticisms from certain quarters that the report was not being implemented with sufficient care, precision, and urgency.
